Spring Skin Myths Dermatologists Wish People Would Stop Believing
Each spring, as the weather warms and people spend more time outdoors, we start hearing many of the same skincare myths. While some of these ideas have circulated for years, they can often lead to habits that are not as healthy for the skin as people think.
Myth #1: “You only need sunscreen at the beach.”
Sun protection is important every day, not just during beach trips or vacations. Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate clouds and reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and even pavement. Daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen helps reduce the risk of premature aging and skin cancer.
Myth #2: “A base tan protects your skin.”
Many people believe that getting a “base tan” early in the season helps prevent sunburn later. In reality, a tan is a sign that the skin has already been damaged by UV radiation. It provides minimal protection and still increases long-term risk of skin damage.
Myth #3: “Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer.”
Warmer temperatures can lead to increased oil production, but that doesn’t mean hydration should be skipped. Using a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer helps maintain the skin barrier and can actually help balance oil production.
Myth #4: “Natural products are always safer.”
“Natural” does not automatically mean gentle or non-irritating. Ingredients derived from plants can still trigger allergic reactions or irritation in sensitive skin.
Spring is a great time to refresh your skincare habits, but healthy skin is less about trends and more about consistency. A simple routine of gentle cleansing, proper hydration, and daily sun protection remains the foundation of good skin care year-round. If you’re not sure where to start, consult with your dermatologist for personalized recommendations.
